Media Diary: Glitch Art

Image
After a long pause Faig Ahmed's glitch rug art popped on my dashboard and that also reminded me that Vaasa Kuntsi Museum has this glitch art exhibition until 13.1.2019. I haven't had the opportunity to go there yet, but maybe soon during the winter break. Overall I didn't know much about the glitch art scene so I read a few articles.      https://www.thisiscolossal.com/2015/11/faig-ahmed-glitched-rugs/ According to Wikipedia the short definition for glitch art is the practice of using digital or analog errors for aesthetic purposes by either corrupting digital data or physically manipulating electronic devices. One of the first examples is "Digital TV Dinner" made in 1978 that was achieved by manipulating a Bally video game console. There are 5 categories for different types of glitch art methods. 1. Data manipulation that changes information in a file. 2. Misalignment where you open a file designed for a certain program in a different program....

Following a famous person AND it's also a media diary post!

Image
My "famous" person for this task is Yuko Shimizu  a 55 year old Japanese illustrator who lives in New York. Shimizu is one of the top illustrators in the world (And shares the same name as the creator of Hello Kitty). She has won many awards including  the prestigious Hamilton King Award . For every piece of art she uses a brush and black ink to draw and adds the colours digitally. I have followed her for a few years now in Facebook and Instagram, but not with that much thought. My interest has been more for the professional side to see her drawing works in progress. I only read her posts occasionally, so maybe paying a bit more attention to her social media habits could be beneficial. https://www.flickr.com/photos/bibliodyssey/6729150263/sizes/o/ Shimizu hasn't posted anything on Facebook in almost a week, but the latest posts were: 1. A shared a post about Home Depot which is giving away sifters so people in California who were affected by the fires can si...

Media diary: Design Potato

(I've had this post in my drafts since the beginning of this course. I might as well post it since I think the subject is still interesting and a little bit funny.) Helsinki Design Week has been around since 2005. I've never lived in Helsinki so I have usually missed most of the buzz. It's the biggest design festival in the Nordic countries and basically about all kinds of design, but also fashion, architecture and urban culture. During the week, which was in September, Wolt delivered some design. If you're not familiar with Wolt, it's basically a food delivery service. I think most restaurants use Wolt or Foodora, or both, for making deliveries for hungry (and hungover) people. https://designdelivered.wolt.com/ Basically the app you use normally to buy food had this possibility to also order design. From prints and cups to jewelry and whatever as long it was suitable for easy delivery. The application was open for all kinds of designers and the artist could...

Music video analysis

Image
For this assignment I picked this music video of a song The Light by HollySiz. I don't usually watch that many music videos and this one happened to come by when I went through my old Youtube likes. I don't think I've listened to this artist before. The song is beautiful though. According to Wikipedia HollySiz is Cécile Cassel, an artist and an actress. This video is from 2014. It has over 2,7 million views. The genre  is pop. I'm not very good at identifying music genres and I was looking for other genres it might represent from the artist's webpage. But it is plainly listed as pop. It's easy to listen to and I think it would appeal to many people. Gender is a very big part of the video and it tells a very clear story about it. The whole clip is basically a short story about a modern family, a husband and a wife and their son. In the beginning the son, who is an elementary school kid, is seen wearing a dress in the school. Other kids are staring...

Media diary: My childhood games

Image
I stumbled upon one of my favourite childhood games that has been recently made available to play on modern computers. It made me think back to my very first games that have a special place in my heart. We had this family friend who sometimes gave us copies of games and we didn't get to choose usually. But most of them were a lot of fun. I played my first games on PC before I knew how to read. Windows 95 released in 1995 (wow) but back then we still didn't have the luxury of the graphic user interface. My dad used to tape numbers on the keyboard to indicate what keys to press in what order so I could open a game in MS-DOS. That probably makes me sound like a huge nerd, but unfortunately I didn't end up becoming one. I think my very first game was  Supaplex . It was released in 1991 and it's one of the many copies of Boulder Dash, but with a computer hardware theme. https://www.mobygames.com/game/supaplex/cover-art/gameCoverId,8353/ I remember that a lot o...
