Media diary: Design Potato
(I've had this post in my drafts since the beginning of this course. I might as well post it since I think the subject is still interesting and a little bit funny.)
Helsinki Design Week has been around since 2005. I've never lived in Helsinki so I have usually missed most of the buzz. It's the biggest design festival in the Nordic countries and basically about all kinds of design, but also fashion, architecture and urban culture.
During the week, which was in September, Wolt delivered some design. If you're not familiar with Wolt, it's basically a food delivery service. I think most restaurants use Wolt or Foodora, or both, for making deliveries for hungry (and hungover) people.

Basically the app you use normally to buy food had this possibility to also order design. From prints and cups to jewelry and whatever as long it was suitable for easy delivery. The application was open for all kinds of designers and the artist could keep all the money from the price they set initially for the items.
In short I think it was a great idea. I remember the prices being quite affordable too. Making art and design easy to acquire and maybe more relatable to wider audiences is great. Some people love these kinds of ways that are not so personal. You can just easily buy it if you see something you like without having to actually talk with the designers. Maybe it might lower the bar for some people to buy for example a piece of design art for themselves. Of course you can order art and design from dozens of webpages all the time, but Design Delivered gives it this unexpected side.
In general I enjoy bringing something a little unusual to a completely new setting like this. Combining a widely used delivery service with something new. Maybe there could be more of this kind of trying out new things with established platforms. As long as it doesn't disrupt the normal use of them.
Now for the potato part.
During the Design Week you could also order this design potato meal "King Potato" made by Kozeen Shiwan. The price was about 10 euros I think, so quite affordable too.
The idea of a design-related potato is hilarious, but the beautiful presentation makes it especially great. We eat so much with our eyes. I think the idea with the whole design delivery thing and this potato is very similar. Taking something maybe a little unexpected and giving it a different environment to make it interesting and fun in new ways.
It's a beautiful potato. No offense to a regular potato.
