Media Diary: About my media habits and other ramblings

I don't have a problem with letting go of my old stuff, as unnecessary poetic as that sounds. At some point years ago I started deleting my old Facebook posts. I haven't posted that much at any point, but these days even less. I feel like I get overloaded by social media so easily that most of the time I try using it it just tires me really quickly. I like following more than creating my own posts. I enjoy the base idea on things like Snapchat and Instagram stories. More possibilities for low-key messages that get deleted after some time. Not everything gets so archived and has to be perfectly and thoroughly planned.

Related to that I don't really keep any old files, or archive my artwork. Oldest are probably from 5 years ago and will probably go to a bin pretty soon. If my computer broke completely I would only really miss ongoing projects that were unfinished. And to be clear I don't see anything wrong with keeping archives of old things, but I just don't feel like it. As much as I'm anxiously and meticulously keeping up with people and events, I would be totally fine without any social media for months. Also I'm not really into collecting things, except for my very small (4) collection of ceramic crocodiles. Makes me sound ascetic, but I mean I'm definitely not a KonMari person, I do own a lot of useless junk. Like dinosaur shaped christmas lights.

Then on the other hand I keep finding myself on my computer multitasking with way too many things happening simultaneously. I might have a TV-series going on on my second monitor while I'm drawing and checking social media all at the same time. When that's been going on for some while I find it hard to really concentrate again on singular things. It affects everything, reading books and trying to play video games or just enjoying a series without doing anything else. I can really understand all those news and studies about people not knowing how to be bored anymore or having trouble concentrating. Luckily I notice the pattern when it starts happening, usually when I'm stressed.

I'm pretty unorganized when it comes to my social media usage. I don't post much on those platforms, but I try to follow my friends on them. I actually enjoy Instagram a lot for it's simplicity even though I generally hate phone only apps. It's not so special to say that people avoid Facebook anymore. But if you want to keep up with events, that's really the only place to do that. So that's what I mainly use it for.

I also browse Tumblr quite a lot. It's kind of terrible. I'm there mainly for the memes and great artists. And to keep my pinterest-que inspiration blog for my own purposes. There is a lot of misinformation and people believe the weirdest things. I feel like 90 % of the times I check sources on popular posts there they end up being false information. That's not a Tumblr only thing, but seems to concentrate there a lot. The majority of people who use Tumblr are pretty young, so that affects the overall feeling of the platform too.

I read or at least glance at Yle news site every day. I try to keep up with recent big news around the world, but I can't say that I spend time reading them that much. I check mostly Polygon for video game news. I visit Reddit to read subreddits about my favourite games to keep up with the latest news there. And my most popular art site is Colossal. It's a neat blog that actively posts about different kinds of art, from traditional to illustration, videos, animation, architecture etc. Very mainstream stuff usually.

My absolute number one genre in films, TV-series and video games is Sci-Fi. And fiction overall. I'm probably going to make a whole post about my all time favourite game Warframe at some point šŸ‘€

  1. dinosaur. christmas. lights.
    where can I get that?????

I completely understand your "no posting" and "deleting old posts"policy for social media. I only started using my instagram stories after I moved to Finland, but just because that's the way most of my friends back in Brazil keep up with my life. They even message me if I don't post anything on "insta stories" for a while.
But other than that I usually feel like social media is a bit pointless because I just assume nobody cares, even though I do like keeping up with my friends' lives.

Also, the illustration is amazing <3

    1. Yeah, I can also relate to that "nobody cares" feeling. (:

      And thanks!

  2. Man, I relate a lot to that multitasking "obsession" and being unable to concentrate on singular things. It's really frustrating when you want to just relax and read a book or play a game but can't focus at all :(

Also the dinosaur shaped christmas lights? Where? How? Are there pictures? They sound absolutely amazing.

    1. Yeah it takes so much work to get that flow back.

I probably need to post a picture of the lights since they are almost relevant to this time of the year now . :D
