My final task

So, I approached the final task as an opportunity to learn something new. I chose movies for the theme, since I don't much discuss them with other. And I often even purposefully keep them as this light entertainment for myself. So I took it as a challenge to learn something about them.

I chose sci-fi for the theme because it's my perhaps favorite genre and I was also interested in learning more about that topic too.

In general I'm better at mixing and matching ideas rather than creating purely my own. So I thought about Inktober. It adds a purpose and some starting point for the thought process.

I pretty soon scrapped the idea of inking, it didn't feel relevant and was too tedious. I ended up just taking (sorry inktoberians) the word list because I didn't feel like adding some sort of time or producing more challenge to it.

The prompt word refers to a scene or overall theme. I drew it and it worked as a method for thinking about the theme. In my mind I either linked the word immediately to an existing movie, or I went through different ones and made connections. I watched a few new movies and rewatched some too. Intended to do more of these, but unsurprisingly I'm bad at planning my time.

There is a short synopsis of the movie, then the theme word.

I also added a bit about the reality aspect of the movies. It often comes up and I find it really interesting. Like NASA has listed these most plausible sci-fi movies.

And yeah I made a layout in InDesign and uploaded it to Issuu for that Maximum  Viewing Experience.

Overall it was really fun, I think I learned more than I originally planned and more than I wrote. Things about influences, the making of movies, people's interpretations, typical things to the genre and more.

I chose 14 movies in the end, which felt like a good amount. Any more and it would feel too tedious. It's also nice to tune in to the movie's feeling for a while from the perspective that the prompt words give. It can give a new way to see it.

Choosing a movie based on a word takes some time. A lot of words like adjectives can be pretty easily linked to a lot of different things. But I also wanted to keep the themes somehow meaningful to myself. Things I like or have made an impact for me in one way or another.

I do wish that I would've written a bit more about the chosen word, some of those are really short and not that good.

From drawing perspective it's enjoyable to find aesthetically pleasing frames and nice exercise to draw in black and white.

One of the best things was that I finally watched 2001: Space Odyssey (shameful, I know) and now it's my favorite. It was such a great viewing experience, the atmosphere is so relaxing and every frame is so aesthetically pleasing. Also it's kinda funny that I watched it and now I'm low-key watching WALL-E while writing and Also sprach Zarathustra plays in both of them. Feels really weird.
